First it was Smallville, now Supernatural. A couple of days ago we reported that Smallville had been picked up for a tenth season. Industry sources in Vancouver provided CinemaSpy with the tip, indicating that while the official announcement has not yet been made, behind-the-scenes it’s all but a done-deal. Today we’ve been informed that Supernatural, too, has been confirmed with another season, in this case its sixth.

The news raises some intriguing conjecture about Supernatural. Season Five had long been touted as the last, with the Winchester brothers finally doing battle against Lucifer during the apocalypse. For a sixth season, what does one do for an encore after slaying Satan?

Creator/producer Eric Kripke has always maintained that the five-year arc would conclude with Sam and Dean confronting the Devil in a final showdown, though he’s also been quick to add that he’s not necessarily out of ideas, either.

Going down the path of speculation, here’s one possibility: the apocalypse story arc could be extended for another season. This might also explain the preponderance of stand-alone episodes already aired this year—many viewers have wondered why the writers have wasted time on these sorts of stories instead of focusing more on end of days themes and the climactic confrontation with Lucifer. The short answer is that it may have been by design.

Another option is that Kripke and the writers dive headlong into the aftermath of Lucifer’s defeat, what it means to the world, and how it impacts on Sam and Dean. What does removing the Devil do to the polarity and balance of the universe? Do penny-ante evildoers ravage the world, with no “dark hierarchy” to keep them in check?

Again, pure speculation.

As an aside, industry insiders have pointed out to CinemaSpy that Smallville, Supernatural and Gossip Girl are the lynchpins of The CW's scripted line-up. Without those shows, the argument goes, the network effectively ceases to exist.

It's an interesting observation.

Meanwhile, Supernatural returns to television tonight with the episode "Sam Interrupted", a clip for which you can watch by using the below player.

Esta série é espectacular e devia ter acabado na 5 temporada. Era um fim em grande. Tenho um pressentimento que a 6 temporada vai trazer desilusao e um fim muito normal.
