When I first recieved my copy I fell in love with the book after only a cursory glance through the pages. It's simply everything a fan could hope for in a guide to their favorite show!
The companion opens with a foreward from the Master, Eric Kripke himself, and follows this up with 'Manifesting Supernatural.' This section takes the reader through the process Eric Kripke had to go through to get our beloved series on the air. While I've heard Mr. Kripke talk about this before at places like the Paley Festival, there is still much more detail to be had in the guide. I especially liked the part where he explains cancelling his Christmas holiday plans to write a revised 'Pilot' script. Now that's dedication!
Following this section we have the main bulk of the book which is made up of the 'Episode Guide.' Here the writer, Nicholas Knight takes us through a summary of each episode, complete with music, images (albiet black and white for the most part) casting, writer and director information - and my favorite part - behind the scenes talk from both cast and crew!
For instance, you can't help but find it amusing when editor Anthony Pinker speaks about Route 666 and the note he got from the network about it:
"The note I got from the network was, 'The girl can't be on top.' But I had a guy run off the road, and another guy got completely crushed inside 'cause a pickup truck ran him over...But y'know, can't have a girl on top. I couldn't figure that one out."
To compliment this, there are also sections about the creatures/spirits in each episode complete with quotes from the Winchesters! Look out for the 'A Closer Look At' pages interspersed throughout the guide to check out your favorite freaks!
Following the episode guide, we have the character chapters. These go through Dean, Sam, John, Mary, Meg, and even the Impala! Each one focuses on the character and the actor/actress who portrays them.
Ackles performance is so convincing that it would seem the wicked wit and egotism come naturally to him, and he admits, "I enjoy the cocky arrogance that Dean has - it's really fun to play." But the congenial Texan thinks that he would be unwise to act like Dean in real life. "I think I'd probably piss a lot of people off in my life if I was like that. But it's fun to play that 'I don't give a crap' attitude."
The latter part of the companion is made up of 'Meet The Crew,' 'Do You Believe,' and a chapter called 'Supernatural Reaction' which looks at just how bad us crazed fans really are! Well, maybe not that crazed...but certainly passionate! Seriously, the chapter talks about fans, merchandizing and the way the media looked at the show.
The very last pages are taken up with a lighter-hearted look at Supernatural, rounding things up with Sam's '22 Reasons Not To Go On a Road Trip With My Brother.' From the title, you just know he's gonna be snarky!
Last, but not least, the whole book is peppered with little "Did You Know?" boxes filled with wonderful words of wisdom about the actors, writers, and behind the scenes happenings that are just so fun to read!
Did you know? In one of many versions of the pilot script, Sam suspected Dean of being a serial killer, and of murdering their father!
All in all, the Season One companion is a true must for any fan who wants a quick reference guide to just about everything the first 22 episodes had to offer. It's kind of like a pocketable version of Supernatural.tv with anecdotes from cast and crew thrown in for good measure. If you love the show, you'll love this book!
